PARALLAX-Mediums & messages, Widely unknown indeed! and comp tracks

(Sorry for the ridiculous length of this, but it’s impossible to just casually write about this band)

This is going to be an extremely difficult post for me to write…I hope I can articulate myself in a way that pays tribute to one of the most important, and underrated bands I have ever come across, and to Blake Donner, their vocalist who tragically passed away along with some of his friends in a caving accident. http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=95690

Parallax was a band from Provo, Utah that played a style of technical, chaotic, and melodic metalcore that like Shai hulud, represented the perfect fusion of the two genres. But no matter how perfect their music was, what made this band stand out was the quality of their lyrical content. Blake Donner wrote socially conscious lyrics that acknowledged the importance of having a message relevant to the people you play to, challenging the conventions of religion in their predominantly Mormon state, the role of the male in a sexist society that still struggles with the belief of men being superior to women, and about defining the terms of your own life and not wasting it.

Part of the tragedy of Blake’s passing is that the world lost one of the musicians in the minority that truly had something of intellectual value to say, and encouraged/inspired those who listed to Parallax to address these issues within the context of their own personal lives. I have never met a casual fan of Parallax; anyone who has come across their sole LP “Mediums & messages” has been affected by the raw sincerity and passion of their music and their words. If Blake hadn’t been taken from the world so early, I have no doubt these guys would have been giants of their subgenre, right on par with Shai hulud and Misery signals.

I don’t mean to knock on bands like For the fallen dreams or The Ghost inside (who are very competent at their brand of mosh-heavy melodic metalcore), but this is the perfect example of how this genre should sound to me; zero focus placed on the individual parts and the way they make the crowd respond, but on the songs as a whole, which is why I feel this band had so much more impact on me as opposed to most of their peers.

Blake passed before their record was finished, never hearing the final product of his hard work. The legendary Greg Bennick from Trial appeared on the album on the spoken word track “Surgery without sutures.” I felt like a train hit me when I first heard this song, it articulated the many frustrations I’ve felt as a young adult trying to make something of my life in way I had never been able to properly convey into words. Here are the lyrics and explanation from the cd booklet:

The impact of this song, and the others they wrote is impossible to explain to anyone without having heard Parallax themselves. Their discography is extremely difficult to find, and I only have the demo, full length and comp tracks. you can download them all here:

Lyrics from Mediums and messages (a must to enjoy them fully)

I know they did a 7” called “On dead tracks” and recorded 3 songs before they broke up that are on their myspace, but not up for download. If anyone has anything that isn’t here, PLEASE send it my way, I wouldn’t be able to tell you how grateful I, and some of my friends would be. I sincerely hope anyone who checks this band out enjoys them half as much as the many people I know who love Parallax.

If I were to try and describe what “being hard” is all about…

Gospel

This band get’s fuckin’ rowdy, does anyone have anything they’ve done besides “The Moon is a dead world?” I’m trying to find their split 10’ with Kodan armada, and their 2 cassette releases “Livid” and “LividII.” Does anybody have the hook up?

Albuquerque screamo/punk bands worth checking out (Adobe homes, La haine, and Sputniq)

So, I thought I’d plug some of my friend’s awesome bands that have material up for download that I guarantee anyone who follows this blog will at the very least appreciate.

Adobe homes

These guys are a super intense, emotional, chaotic screamo band that have been around a few years. They have already put out a bunch of vinyl and tapes, and have been touring, so I’m pretty sure you have a decent chance of catching these guys live if you don’t live here. They have the majority of their discography up for download on their myspace, so check it out!

La haine

These guys just barely started, and they already have a super sweet demo out. If you like emotional screamo with riffs that have a classic 90’s emo “tinge” to them, you’ll love this. I was in my first band with their bassist, and did one other with him briefly, and he’s the greatest dude in the world. All of these guys are super awesome people in general.

Sputniq

I was in a band called The Decca sequence ( http://www.myspace.com/thedeccasequence ) with 2 of these guys, and they were easily the nicest and best musicians I’ve ever worked with. They started up this band a year and a half or so back, and have been touring and releasing music since. It’s super technical tap-guitar punk with a decent amount of screamo parts. They do sing-yelled vocals that are super catchy, and have a really “happy” sound that reflects the kind of positive individuals they are. Definitely infectious melodies that will stay in your head, so give it a listen:

I really cannot express how much I love these bands and the guys that are in them. Hopefully whoever reads this can find something they enjoy!

Fringe, Season 3
Holy shit. This season is become one of the best I’ve ever witnessed on television. It’s starting to rival Lost, especially with what it’s building up to. Seriously, if you haven’t seen this show, I would suggest to start from the beginning. It’s only gonna get better.

I hope anyone who got some of the discographies I posted are enjoying them! Is there any band(s) in particular you’d like to see get a discography post soon?

Alright, here is the grand daddy of all discographies for me: Creation is crucifixion. It literally took me 10+ years to complete this collection. Some of their material is so rare it’s laughable, I’m lucky I asked for a bunch of stuff from them, Cryptopsy, Circle of dead children, and Opeth for Christmas ‘01 (I ended up with all the weird noise-only releases that were super rare that year, lucky me).

There is so much that can be said about this band that existed so far beyond the scope of what normal recording artists do, that I wouldn’t even know where to begin, so I’ve provided several links for those interested in learning about their extreme ideology. All I have to say is that including manuals with your CDs on how to reverse-engineer gameboy games to feature subversive messages, and creating a database to make and download barcodes of any price you want for wal-mart products is the most punk thing I have ever heard of in my entire life.

These guys played a style of tech-metal that had a very oppressive, bleak air to it, and did several experimental noise releases (some live on pirate radio stations no less). They were also obsessed with the notion of the human brain being replaced with binary coding, and being manipulated/controlled by nanotechnology; this message popped up over and over throughout the course of their existence as a band.

So, here is the link for everything they ever did:

and I can’t recommend checking these 2 blogs out enough to read up on this unique band:

(Thanks to Robotic obscurities for completing my collection)

If Fringe gets canceled, I will seriously fucking kill myself.

(Creation is crucifixion discography and Albuquerque NM punk/screamo band download posts later tonight)

I unfortunately don’t have a lot of time to write about this, but I really love this movie and wanted to make a post about it! Taboo (Gohatto-1999), which is currently the last directorial effort from Nagisa Oshima (In the realm of the senses, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence) is a haunting Japanese film about a young, striking, a nd mysterious boy whose great skill earns him a place in the Shinsengumi (the equivalent to a specialized police group that protected the shogunate from reformist forces before/during the Meiji restoration in 1868) but his boyish appearance makes a majority of the all male group very attracted to him, creating a very dangerous, and lethal tension amongst them.

This movie is definitely an underrated gem in my opinion, featuring an ominous score by Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Last emperor), and excellent performances across the board, including one from the legendary Beat Takeshi. The subject matter of fatal/forbidden love is definitely familiar territory for Oshima, and as always is utilized in way that defies stagnation and instead makes for a searing drama. As the original title “Gohatto” roughly translates into “the code,” (as in Bushido, the code of the samurai) I find the American name of this film to be a gigantic misnomer, implying to that the “taboo” of this story is homosexuality, while it was in fact highly encouraged between the warrior class of Japan in the “Shudo” tradition. The Taboo is clearly the desire created in his fellow officers that breaks down the order and discipline of the Shinsengumi ranks.

As a fan of Japanese history/culture, and Nagisa Oshima, I highly recommend this to anyone who hasn’t seen it! I believe this title is unfortunately out of print, but still available through Amazon for anyone interested.

Teen cthulhu Update #2: By the grace of…something, I got that “last show” live recording after posting this today. It features 2 songs they never recorded, and a Boyz II men “cover,” complete your collection and download that nastiness here:
